Nearly 100 Percent of Fresenius Kidney Care Facilities Achieve 5-Diamond Patient Safety Status in 2018
WALTHAM, Mass. Jan. 31, 2019 – Fresenius Kidney Care, the dialysis division of Fresenius Medical Care North America and the nation’s leading network of dialysis facilities, achieved industry-leading results from the 2018 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program for the third straight year. The program improves the patient experience in dialysis facilities by promoting a culture of safety.
Fresenius Kidney Care maintained its 5-Diamond status at 99.96 percent of its in-center and home hemodialysis programs, while 100 percent of enrolled Fresenius Kidney Care acute care dialysis centers achieved 5-Diamond status. Acute care centers alone saw a 13 percent improvement in performance year over year, even while increasing enrollment. Fresenius Kidney Care added more than 100 new acute, home and in-center clinics into the program last year, increasing the total participating from 2,764 in 2017 to 2,860 in 2018.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of people living with kidney disease because we succeed in our mission when our patients thrive on dialysis and live longer, healthier lives,” said Mike Asselta, President of Fresenius Kidney Care. “We are proud to lead our industry in raising awareness and implementing concrete steps that promote a culture of patient safety.”
The 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program consists of 18 patient safety education modules. Each dialysis facility must complete five modules the first year participating in the program to be recognized, and then three modules each consecutive year to maintain status as a 5-Diamond Patient Safety Facility. The program is administered by two of the nine end stage renal disease (ESRD) networks in the U.S. and is endorsed by the other seven as well as leading renal organizations, including the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA) and Renal Physicians Association (RPA).
Fresenius Kidney Care’s results outpaced dialysis providers nationwide with nearly 100 percent of its facilities achieving 5-Diamond status compared to the 93 percent of all participating providers that achieved this status. Nearly 44 percent of all dialysis providers participated in the 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program.
Fresenius Kidney Care will continue to participate in the 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program as part of its commitment to delivering an exceptional patient experience.
